‘No other place like it.’ Dayton football to play final game at O.W. Davis Field

Walking into Dayton’s O.W. Davis Field is like walking into the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa.

No, the ghosts of former Greendevil football players don’t take the field on Friday nights, but after the Work Progress Administration built the stadium in 1934, the people of Dayton came.

“There’s no other place like it,” Dayton head coach Jesse Herbst said.

Plenty of memories have been made on Vine Street in the last 90 years. One more memory will be made this Friday against Newport Central Catholic before the football and soccer teams move their home games to a new stadium being built between the elementary and high school.

“I really want to go out there and compete. Four quarters of good Greendevil football,” senior Mason Fromeyer said.

Dayton Greendevil football is a family

Most of the coaches at Dayton either played for the Greendevils or have family members who did. Many of the players on this year’s team are following in their family’s footsteps.

Peyton Young’s maternal grandfather started his family’s tradition, and Young’s uncles, dad and older brother were all coached by Herbst.

“There’s no sport here more popular than football. Nothing brings in people more than football. When we have a homecoming game, even years where we weren’t very good, there’s standing room only close to the fence and the seats are all filled to the brim,” Fromeyer said.

Dayton’s O.W. Davis Field was built on the site of a former landfill.

Herbst embodies Greendevil football. He played at Dayton in the late 1980s, returned as an assistant coach from 1995 to 2003, and has been the head coach since 2019. He knows what Dayton football means to the city but also what high school football means to Northern Kentucky as a whole.
