COLUMBIA — South Carolina football landed its fifth class of 2026 commit on Thursday, as four-star South Pointe safety J’Zavien Currence announced he will play for the Gamecocks.
Currence is the No. 1 recruit in South Carolina and the ninth-best safety in his class according to the 247Sports Composite. He posted the news on social media with the caption “10000000% committed.”
Seven minutes before Currence’s announcement, coach Shane Beamer wrote a positive message on X about recruitment, saying “What a GREAT way to start the weekend !!!!!!!!” with a picture of the South Carolina state flag.
Currence, from Rock Hill, South Carolina, had offers from Clemson, Georgia, Oregon, Ohio State and other top programs, according to 247Sports.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound cornerback plays all over the field for South Pointe. This season he is 32-of-49 passing for 450 yards, has 172 yards receiving on nine catches and 202 yards rushing on 31 carries. He has 10 total touchdowns, including seven passing, and he also has seven solo tackles.
He is the fifth recruit and second four-star commit for Beamer in the 2026 class. Linebacker Rodney Colton Jr was the first when he committed to South Carolina in April.

The news comes 48 hours before the Gamecocks play Oklahoma in Norman on Saturday (12:45 p.m. ET, SEC Network).
