There were moments in the third quarter where the Plainfield football team seemed poised to pull off the biggest upset of the 2024 season.
Trailing by six late in the third quarter, the Panthers had possession at the East Haven 10-yard line late in the third quarter.
Then there was an interception on a desperate fourth-down play.
Then there was a turnover on downs at midfield on their next possession.
Then there was a game-ending injury to senior running back/linebacker Tony Navan.
Then came 28 straight points from the Yellowjackets.
Plainfield senior Tony Navan tries to elude a tackle from East Haven’s Kaydon Staron (8) on Friday night at Frank Crisafi Field in East Haven.
Plainfield rose to the occasion for three quarters before East Haven ran away with a 42-8 victory in a feisty ECC-SCC Connecticut Football Alliance battle Friday night at Frank Crisafi Field.
“This is the best effort we have had all season,” Plainfield coach Pat Smith said. “The score is obviously no indication of how we performed today. We came down here and gave it our all and fought to the end. That’s what I’m most proud of.”
Plainfield had a fourth-and-1 near midfield in the final seconds of the third quarter but East Haven’s defense swarmed over Tony Navan and stopped the Panthers short of the first down marker. Navan was hurt on the play and his absence in the fourth quarter took the wind from the Panthers’ sails.
“We lose our heart and soul,” Smith said. “It’s still a ballgame and our kids know that.”
