Javonte Smith showed off speed in Jackson North Side’s win over rival South Side

Javonte Smith stood in the end zone, waiting for an overthrown pass to hit him between the 2 and the 5 on his jersey.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound North Side junior sprinted 100 yards into the other end zone for an interception return for a touchdown in North Side’s 28-7 home win over South Side on Friday.

“When I saw him catch it, I knew it was six (points),” said North Side coach Woodrow Lowe. “He just has that kind of speed and explosiveness with the ball in his hands.”

The interception return is Smith’s second this season. He has generated a solid output this season for North Side (5-3, 3-0 Region 6-4A).

Smith has 364 receiving yards, 132 kick return yards and 195 interception return yards. He has three receiving touchdowns, a rushing TD, kick return for a TD. His second interception return for a touchdown makes seven all-purpose TDs this season.

As a defensive back, Smith has three interceptions, including the one from the win over South Side (2-5, 0-3).

While the numbers are not exactly eye-popping, Smith’s physical talent has been garnering attention from Power 4 colleges in the region. He is a three-star recruit on 247Sports and is ranked No. 19 for wide receivers in Tennessee for the Class of 2026.

Smith has offers from Kentucky, Liberty, Missouri, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. He went on a gameday visit to Alabama when the Crimson Tide beat Georgia at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

“Georgia should’ve never came back,” Smith said, laughing in reference to Alabama’s 41-34 win on Sept. 28 in which the Bulldogs nearly earned a monumental come-from-behind victory.

Additionally, Smith has been to Missouri and Tennessee for gameday visits. He said the atmospheres of big-time college football was exciting for him to see.
