Lake Gibson football shows why its future looks bright as offense rolls over Winter Haven

WINTER HAVEN — On the first play of the game, Lake Gibson quarterback Collin Henderson just barely overthrew wide receiver Derrick McBride at midfield. That was one of only a few plays that didn’t click for the Braves on Friday night.

Lake Gibson’s offensive performance in its 38-0 victory over Winter Haven at Denison Stadium was just as head coach Rich Pringle envisioned it could as the Braves piled 391 yards of total offense in the rout with a high-powered, balanced attack.

“Everything clicked tonight,” Pringle said. “We finally had confidence in our own ability. I told them before the game, I don’t need big plays. I need everybody to execute perfectly and the big plays happen as a result. That’s what happened. We executed our job and the big plays came.”

The young Braves went through some growing pains through the first six games against what has been the second-toughest schedule in Class 5A, but sporadically displayed their potential. Fortunately for them, they never lost confidence.

“I’m always confident, every game,” McBride said. “It’s just a matter if we can do it or not.”

The Braves (3-4) certainly did it against the Blue Devils, and if they can build on that performance, they could have a bright future over the final weeks of the current season, along with next season. Consider the top playmakers on Friday:

Henderson, who completed 9-of-13 passes for 223 yards, is a sophomore.

McBride, his top target against Winter Haven with four catches for 141 yards, is a junior.

Wide receiver Adonis Cuyler, who had two catches — both for touchdowns — for 61 yards, is a sophomore.
