New Philadelphia football edges past West Holmes thanks to late defensive score

Like a pair of heavyweight fighters in the boxing ring, West Holmes and visiting New Philadelphia went toe to toe, exchanging blows, with the Quakers landing the final haymaker with a defensive score to pull out a 38-31 triumph over the Knights in Ohio Cardinal Conference action on Friday night.

Quaker sophomore defensive back Kolston Fox pounced on a fumble with 2:20 to play in the game to provide the final score.

Lynn Cline (9) turns up field after taking a pass from Morgan Smith during first half action against the visiting New Philadelphia Quakers.

After West Holmes put together a 13-play, 73-yard drive that knotted the game at 31-apiece midway through the fourth quarter, New Philadelphia marched 66 yards in eight plays as time was running down in the final frame, but the Quakers fumbled at the West Holmes one-yard line.

The Knights were on their third quarterback of the evening, having lost both starter Morgan Smith and back-up Brayden Parsons to injury, and freshman Rhett Chaney was thrown into the fire with West Holmes’ back against the wall, and a fumbled exchange led to the Quakers’ final score.

Caleb Crowthers (28) leads a trio of Quaker tacklers on a first-half sack of West Holmes quarterback Morgan Smith.

“Getting that defensive score was huge,” Quaker coach Mike Johnson said. “We were close to getting in there before, but when the ball goes down and touches the ground there, it’s such a bummer. But our guys were able to get that defensive score, which was huge.”

“That was an all-around team performance,” NPHS senior co-captain and two-way lineman Boston Crowell said. “Everyone was playing for each other with attitude and effort on every play. That’s all we’re asked to do, and that’s what we did. I’ll give it to West Holmes, they’re definitely the most physical team we’ve played this year.”
