Three-star Bartlett senior linebacker Austin Howard has decommitted from Mississippi State, making the announcement on Tuesday morning on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Howard, ranked No. 23 in Tennessee’s 2025 class and No. 69 at linebacker per 247Sports Composite, told The Commercial Appeal that Tennessee and Vanderbilt are now his leading schools. He said he plans to announce a decision in late December.
After months of Vols coaches encouraging Howard to visit Knoxville, the Bartlett star took an official visit to Neyland Stadium last Saturday for No. 7 Tennessee’s 24-17 victory over then-No. 15 Alabama. Fans rushed the field after the game and Howard said he was impressed with Knoxville and the stadium’s atmosphere.
“It was an amazing experience, there’s nowhere else like it,” Howard said. “From the people, to the rumbling of the stadium when it’s a third down and they need a stop. The coaches are great, too. Players love playing for them.”

Coach Josh Heupel’s staff first offered Howard back on Apr. 8, just three days after Howard committed to Vanderbilt, where he remained committed until June 23 when he flipped to the Bulldogs.
Both Vanderbilt and Tennessee have been pushing ever since for the 6-foot-2, 226-pound linebacker who ranked No. 4 in The Commercial Appeal’s Dandy Dozen which also included teammate Geron Johnson, who remains committed to the Bulldogs.
As for the Commodores, Howard said he’s maintained daily contact with their staff even after flipping his commitment elsewhere.
