Indiana football: How QB Tayven Jackson’s experience stacks up against other Big Ten backups

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football’s quarterback situation has been the envy of the Big Ten this season.

The No. 13 Hoosiers (7-0; 4-0 Big Ten) struck gold in the transfer portal with former Ohio quarterback Kurtis Rourke, but their depth will be tested this weekend when Tayven Jackson starts against Washington.

Indiana announced Rourke would be sidelined indefinitely with the thumb injury he suffered in the second quarter of a 56-7 win over Nebraska.

Jackson looked sharp in the second half, but he won’t benefit from having a 28-7 on Saturday.

“We have 100% confidence and the team has 100% confidence, I have confidence, the staff has confidence in Tayven Jackson,” Indiana coach Curt Cignetti said.

Jackson ended up as the lone holdover in IU’s quarterback room from last year after Cignetti took over. The new staff also signed freshmen Tyler Cherry and Alberto Mendoza, but he held them off to win the backup job coming out of camp.

The Center Grove alum came into this year having played in nine career games with five starts that all came last year in 2023. He only played the full game in two of those starts and had a total of 297 of experience.

How does that stack up to other backup quarterbacks in the Big Ten? Right in the middle of the pack.

There are a couple of teams (Minnesota and Washington) that rolled into 2024 with a true freshman backing up their starter, but plenty of other teams opted to lock in some experience at the position.

The most extreme example of that is Michigan State backup Tommy Schuster. He leads the conference in experience as a North Dakota State transfer who started 42 career games for his former school.

Here’s a look at how Jackson’s experience stacks up with all the backup quarterbacks in the Big Ten conference this season:

Indiana’s Kurtis Rourke (9), Tayven Jackson (2), Alberto…
