Texas A&M vs LSU: Aggies preparing for ‘extremely talented’ No. 9 Tigers

COLLEGE STATION — After a hard-fought win over Mississippi State this past weekend, Texas A&M football turns its attention to a big Week 9 matchup with sole possession of first place in the SEC on the line.

On Monday, head coach Mike Elko set his sights on an LSU football team fresh off a win victory over Arkansas.

“They’re extremely talented. They’ve gotten more and more comfortable with the defense,” Elko told reporters Monday. “Some of the natural progression and growth, you’ve seen that from them from start to finish.”

The No. 14 Aggies (6-1, 4-0 SEC) welcome the Tigers (6-1, 3-0) to Kyle Field for a nationally televised matchup with College Football Playoff implications.

Here are some takeaways from Elko’s comments Monday during his weekly conference with reporters:

Preparing for LSU’s potent offensive attack

Of the offenses that Texas A&M has faced thus far, only Notre Dame (26th) has a better scoring offense than the 29th-ranked Tigers.

Elko knows his defense is in for a tough challenge Saturday night, and according to Elko, it starts with their quarterback.

“(Garrett) Nussmeier can make every throw, and he’s a testament to doing things the right way,” Elko said. “You see so many kids jumping around, and when you’re jumping around, you’re not getting better. … He has stayed the course. He’s really comfortable in their system. He has grown and developed.”

Nussmeier, a junior from Lake Charles, Louisiana, has played for LSU for four years and appeared in 25 games in his career.
