What Oregon football’s Dan Lanning said about Ducks’ top-25 matchup vs. Illinois

Following its first shutout victory in over a decade against Purdue last Friday, the No. 1 Oregon football team will return to Autzen Stadium Saturday for another top-25 showdown against No. 21 Illinois.

The game is set to kick off at 12:30 p.m.

Here are some highlights from Oregon coach Dan Lanning during his weekly press conference Monday night.

Dan Lanning on Oregon football’s No. 1 ranking: ‘Who cares?’

When asked about the significance of Oregon’s No. 1 ranking in both the AP and the US LBM coaches polls, and securing their first No. 1 ranking since 2012, Lanning kept it simple about what it means to him and the team.

“Who cares?” he responded.

When asked a follow-up on how Lanning keeps the message the same and avoids letting his team delve too deeply into rankings and what others think about their program from the outside, he gave a more thoughtful response.

“I think it’s really simple for us when our messaging hasn’t changed the entire year,” Lanning said. “You don’t sit halfway through a meal and say you’re done eating when there’s still a lot of food left on the plate. That’s where we’re at. We’re at the midway point of the season. We’re not done yet. There’s a lot of things that we still want to accomplish. That doesn’t really matter for us.”

Oregon’s No. 1 ranking is its first since Nov. 11, 2012, when it rose to the top of the Week 12 AP poll before losing the following week to Stanford. The Ducks were No. 1 in 2010 for seven straight weeks before slipping to No. 2 in the final AP poll of the regular season.
