Tennessee is sitting pretty in the College Football Playoff picture. But there are still teams that could leapfrog the Vols down the stretch.
On this episode of “The Volunteer State” podcast, hosts Adam Sparks and John Adams break down the five SEC teams that could jump past UT in the race toward the playoff. And, yes, that includes Alabama.
They also talk about how Tennessee beat Alabama with a lockdown defense, a late-arriving offense and … fake crowd noise? The allegation from the Alabama play-by-play announcer sounds too far-fetched to discuss, but they give it a try.
These SEC teams could be obstacles in Tennessee playoff path
Sizing up Tennessee’s playoff competition was just a fun exercise for Sparks and Adams.
So Vol fans, don’t panic. It’s just for educational purposes only during the open week.
For the sake of the exercise, they assumed that UT finishes with a 10-2 record and that Georgia and Texas meet in the SEC title game. That would leave the Vols fighting for an at-large bid to the playoff along with other SEC teams.

Here’s the breakdown of the SEC’s other possible contenders:
Missouri(6-1) could jump past UT if it runs the table with wins over Alabama, South Carolina and Arkansas to finish with an 11-1 record. But that run could end Saturday in Tuscaloosa. That’s why Adams believes Missouri will fade from the playoff picture.
Ole Miss (5-2) also must run the table, including a win over Georgia, to finish season with a 10-2 record and compete with the Vols for a spot. Sparks doesn’t think an Ole Miss win at Arkansas is guaranteed. Adams said the Rebels could win out, which is why UT fans should root for Georgia to beat them.
Texas A&M (6-1) is undefeated in SEC play and has a “good loss” to playoff contender Notre Dame.. So Texas…
