5 things to watch when Cincinnati Bearcats football takes on Colorado Saturday night

Much like it was in their last meeting in Boulder in 1972, the Cincinnati Bearcats have a tall order on the football field Saturday night. The Buffaloes were ranked second in the country 52 years ago and proved it by thumping the Bearcats 56-14.

UC head coach Scott Satterfield was months away from being born the last time around, but his team has an equally tough matchup at Folsom Field as Colorado hosts a home night game on Parents Weekend.

The Buffaloes have the flash of “Coach Prime” Deion Sanders and a team blessed with speed and the ability to spread the field. The Bearcats were picked 13th in a 16-team league and weren’t supposed to be a factor.

Yet, the teams have identical records of 5-2 and 3-1 in the Big 12 and have warranted a national TV audience on ESPN.

1. Colorado’s offense is known, but the defense also excels

The Buffaloes throwing game has received all of the headlines as they’re seventh in the country in passing offense led by quarterback Shedeur Sanders, son of Deion. Sanders is No. 2 in the country in completions per game averaging over 27. As UC’s defense has made some recent strides, the Colorado unit is No. 8 among NCAA FBS schools in red zone defense.

Deion Sanders used his NFL ties to hire Robert Livingston as defensive coordinator with former NFL players Damione Lewis and Warren Sapp coaching defensive line.

I do think that their defense is getting overlooked a little bit,” Satterfield said. “I believe their defense is playing really good this year. I think they’ve played a lot better as the season has gone on and that is what you want.
