Cougars and fifth-ranked Savages set for collision course

Oct. 24—Before the season, Ada was ranked No. 3 in the 2024 Vype Oklahoma Pigskin Preview. Broken Bow was predicted to finish dead last in District 4A-4.

Things are a little bit different now, heading into a Week 8 showdown between the Ada Cougars and Broken Bow Savages scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Norris Field.

Broken Bow comes to town at 6-1 on the year and ranked No. 5 in the latest Tulsa World Class 4A rankings and sits atop the District 4A-4 standings at 4-0. Meanwhile, Ada is now 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the district. However, the winner of Friday night’s clash will be the frontrunner for the 4A-4 crown.

The Savages dropped a 37-26 shootout at McAlester to open the 2024 season and have now reeled off six consecutive wins. The Savages knocked off Hilldale 37-22 in a Week 7 home game. In their five other victories, Broken Bow has scored at least 42 points.

Ada head coach Wade Boyles said the reason folks missed out on preseason prognostications when it comes to the Savages is a group of new athletes who decided to play football when new Broken Bow head coach Maverick Lang was hired.

“They had a bunch of kids come out when their new coaching staff came in. They weren’t anticipated to be this high up in the district rankings. But Coach Lang has done a great job with those guys down there. They’re executing at a high level right now,” Boyles told The Ada News Wednesday morning. “This game has big district implications. I think it’s going to be a really good football game.”

Perhaps the biggest addition to the Broken Bow roster is sophomore quarterback Greydon Howell, who was one of the best freshman basketball players in Class 4A a year ago.
