Former Ohio State QB Kyle McCord throws three pick-6s in first half vs Pitt

Former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord had a first half to forget for Syracuse football on Thursday.

McCord threw four interceptions in the first half of the Orange’s ACC game against Pitt at Acrisure Stadium, including three returned for touchdowns. Coming into Thursday’s game, McCord had thrown just six interceptions in Syracuse’s first six games of the season. The Panthers held a 31-0 lead at halftime.

McCord threw an interception on each of the first three drives. On the Orange’s first drive of the game, McCord was picked off by Pitt’s Rasheem Biles, who returned the interception for 35 yards for the first score.

On Syracuse’s next drive, Brandon George picked off a pass from McCord on a third-and-10 at the Syracuse 44. In the second quarter, the third drive also ended with the same result: This time, Kyle Louis returned one for a 59-yard pick-6.

The Orange’s offensive struggles went beyond McCord. A 13-play drive on the fourth drive ended with a turnover on downs on a fourth-and-6 from the Pitt 35, when McCord and tight end Oronde Gadsden II were unable to connect on a pass.

McCord threw his third pick-6 on the second-to-last drive for the Orange of the first half. Braylan Lovelace picked off the pass from McCord and returned it 33 yards for the touchdown.

According to ESPN, Pitt is the first FBS team to have three defensive scores in a half this season.

In the first half, McCord completed 16 of 34 passes for 130 yards and four interceptions. He was also sacked twice by the Pitt defense, who recorded six quarterback hurries. The Panthers turned Syracuse over four times and scored 24 points off turnovers for the half.
