‘I am still encouraged’: Kent State football needs success in all phases for wins in MAC

KENT — Postseason bowl hopes are out the window for Kent State, but the college football season rolls on regardless.

Mid-American Conference competition has proven to be just as challenging as nonconference opponents for the winless Golden Flashes (0-7, 0-3), who lost 27-6 at Bowling Green a week ago.

‘We have to continue to get better, continue to work at the things we are deficient in,” Flashes coach Kenni Burns said. “We have to raise our floor. I am still encouraged by our football team and its growth.”

The Golden Flashes have the opportunity to hand Western Michigan (4-3, 3-0) its first MAC loss when the teams meet at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Kalamazoo. The Broncos have won three games in a row and are the last team without a conference defeat.

As obvious as it sounds, Kent State will need to have its first balanced attack of the season to cool off a hot team.

Balancing the offense is what Kent State needs to succeed

The KSU offense did a whole lot of nothing in the four games leading into conference play, totaling just 41 points and being shut out twice. In the three weeks since, it has come to life with 74 points, but has not been consistent enough for the team to be victorious.

In the first two games against MAC opponents, the offense was spearheaded by junior quarterback Tommy Ulatowski, who threw for more than 700 yards and seven touchdowns in losses to Eastern Michigan and Ball State. However, the Flashes combined to run for just 144 yards and three touchdowns.
