Sports Speak Up: Elated over UNM football

Oct. 24—Praise for Bronco

Make no mistake about it — Bronco (Mendhenhall) is our coach. Three-game winning streak aside, watching his post-game interview on the field after the Utah State game should be all any Lobo fan needs to throw support to Bronco and his program. He was in tears, and appropriately and sincerely praised his players.

Who knows what the future will bring with the transfer portal, league realignments, etc. but I’ll take Bronco any day in my foxhole … Really glad you’re here, coach.

Ken Sanderson — Jumping for joy

Great road win by our football team at Utah State. This win is especially sweet considering it was against USU last year that lead to Danny (Gonzales) being fired. Following our win against USU on Saturday, I was jumping around my house like we won a championship. A foreshadowing of great things to come?

A three-game winning streak: Let that sink in. Bronco is already a year or two ahead of schedule and it’s gonna be fun watching him build our football program from the ground up, brick by brick.

George Scott — Some things better left unrecruited

If coach G (Danny Gonzales) or any other coach got a dollar for every time he didn’t recruit a player and that player did well , he would be a millionaire Case in point: Brian Urlacher was a MVP for a Texas Tech football camp and they never offered him a scholarship. He didn’t like it, but he didn’t go to their practice field. Instead he accepted a UNM scholarship, played for Rocky Long and became an All-American.

New Mexico State and Diego Pavia did very well last year with 10 wins and a win over Auburn. But keep in mind, State lost to two teams from the Mountain West (Hawaii and Fresno State) that the Lobos beat last year. If State was in the MWC, their win total would have been 7.

Pavia left State without any hesitation to play for the same…
