The stage is set, and the stakes are known.
When No. 14 Texas A&M football (6-1, 4-0) and the No. 7 LSU Tigers (6-1, 3-0) step on the field Saturday night at Kyle Field, one team will remain undefeated in the conference and remain in control of its playoff destiny.
The other will suffer its second loss of the year and may need outside help to make the postseason field of 12.
“You embrace this as the opportunities you came to Texas A&M to be part of,” head coach Mike Elko told reporters Wednesday during the SEC’s weekly teleconference. “It’s how you can identify that this has more on the national stage and national exposure, but we don’t want to just be in these games. We want to be successful in them.”
PREDICTIONS: Texas A&M football vs LSU scouting report
Historic rivalry adds another chapter
A&M versus LSU history predates the 20th century; their first matchup was in 1899. The two team have played on and off for more than 100 years with conference realignment or other dynamics causing sporadic, 10-to-15-year breaks in the action. But the teams have now played annually since 2012.
Week 9 will be the 58th official meeting between the programs, with LSU and A&M having split the last six matchups. It’s been a streaky series historically.
LSU won seven straight against its rivals to the west between 2010-2017. That followed a stretch in the early 1990s when the Aggies had won six of seven (the rivalry was put on ice for 15 years after the formation of the Big 12).
The two programs have met eight previous times while both were ranked, but with the new college football playoff system, the ninth matchup Saturday may be the biggest to date.
