Alabama defender LT Overton called for late hit on Brady Cook on officiating mistake

The officials in the Alabama football matchup against Missouri are not making many friends in Tuscaloosa.

With the No. 15 Crimson Tide leading No. 17 Missouri 3-0 mid-way through the first quarter at Bryant-Denny Stadium, a crucial call aided a struggling Tigers offense on a third down. Facing a third-and-7 from his own 17-yard line, Brady Cook received a snap from center and was hit by Alabama’s LT Overton for a sack.

However, the play had been blown dead, unbeknownst to everyone in the stadium — including Overton. Missouri was called for a delay of the game, as the play clock had expired before it could snap the ball. But even though no one heard the whistle and the players kept playing, Overton was assessed with a 15-yard penalty for a late hit.

It was the first time in the game the Tigers had converted a first down, as the ball moved to the Missouri 32-yard line. Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer lit into the referees for the call. ESPN officiating analyst Matt Austin joined the broadcast and agreed with DeBoer that there should not have been a penalty on Overton.

“This is a tough play. I had a play exactly like this one time in Alabama, the exact same thing, a delay of game,” Austin said. “I couldn’t hear the delay of the game, and the defender blew up the quarterback. I didn’t hear the whistle, I didn’t enforce the late hit because I couldn’t hear the whistle blow. I didn’t blame the defender. This is a tough one.”

Luckily for Alabama and the officials, the Missouri drive ended in a punt, and no damage was done.
