Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti went right from “The Walk” to the ESPN College GameDay set on the South Lawn outside Memorial Stadium for a brief sit down with Rece Davis and company before Saturday’s game against Washington.
He started out by sharing a personal story involving former IU coach Lee Corso.
“My dad overcame cancer when I was a senior in high school,” Cignetti said. “Lee sent a holy cross that in the letter had special healing powers, that sat on top of his dresser from surgery through his recovery. He beat cancer and lived 43 more years.”

Corso sat next to Cignetti on the set and wanted to know about the former JMU coach’s demeanor in the fourth quarter of last week’s blowout win over Nebraska. The question gave Cignetti the opportunity to tease his former mentor Nick Saban, who joined GameDay as a co-host this season.
“You never want to let up, you always want to coach for the next game,” Saban said.
“When I was getting my ass ripped in the fourth quarter I could never figure it out,” Cignetti said, referencing his time with Saban. “Now I got it figured it out.”
Cignetti was part of Saban’s first coaching staff at Alabama.
He was the Crimson Tide’s wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator when they won a national title in 2009. Saban said Cignetti brought the same confident demeanor to the table that he’s become known for in Bloomington.
“It rubs off on everybody,” Saban said. “The culture in this place has completely changed because of that attitude.”
The appearance ended with Cignetti leading the students in attendance in a brief “Go IU!” chant before heading back to the locker room.”
“Alright, I got to go to work,” he laughed.
