MARLBOROUGH – First contract rarely stopped Blackstone Valley Tech running back Jeremiah Thomas against Assabet on Friday.
It usually took second, third and fourth, often simultaneously. He spearheaded a bruising Beavers rushing attack with 149 yards on the ground and three touchdowns on just 20 carries in a 39-20 victory.
“We’ve got some tough running backs. We don’t get flustered when we get hit,” Thomas said. “We just get up and hit somebody.”
BVT’s Bryce Sheldon added 29 yards and a score on a night where BVT (5-2) ran for five touchdowns.
“Between the offensive line and both backs, their second effort, run after contact is huge,” BVT coach Anthony Landini said. “They just seemed to fall forward every time and get us five, six yards a whack. That’s a tribute to them reading and our offensive line.”
Lucas Greenstein earns first varsity win
The strong offensive line play and running game provided the ideal ecosystem for Beavers junior Lucas Greenstein to make his first varsity start. He filled in last week against Northbridge after starter Alex Burgos left with a shoulder injury and prepared all week to face Assabet (1-6). Greenstein has been BVT’s junior varsity quarterback for two years.
The Beavers received the opening kickoff and allowed Greenstein to settle in with productive handoffs to Thomas and a comfortable rollout throw to Nick Whitlock that gained 12 yards. Greenstein capped the drive with a seven-yard touchdown run for his first varsity score.
“We usually try to get the nerves out of a quarterback early by giving him a play with his number attached to it. It gets the jitters out of there early,” Landini said. “If you put him in a position where he makes a mistake early, you don’t want him to compound that problem mentally.”
