Who has the edge? Breaking down New Mexico-Colorado State by position

Oct. 25—A position-by-position look at who has the edge as New Mexico travels to Colorado State:

Quarterback

New Mexico

Projected starter: Devon Dampier, So.

Backup: Isaiah Chavez, R-Sr.

Colorado State

Projected starter: Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi, R-So.

Backup: Jackson Brousseau, R-Fr.

Analysis: The way Devon Dampier treated it, Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week was more of a team honor than an individual one for the sophomore quarterback.

“It means a lot,” Dampier said after practice on Tuesday. “I thought that was one of our more team wins than any we’ve had before. Being down as an offense, going three-and-out a couple times and the defense getting scored on right away — I think that’s the first time where we collectively had adversity and (didn’t have) a lead the last couple of weeks.

“And, you know, we fought through it as a team. So just for me to be recognized with that, truly shoutout to my team.”

So, the team stat: A 50-45 win over Utah State, UNM’s third-straight victory. And Dampier’s final stats: 17-for-27 passing for 272 yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions and a team-high 105 rushing yards with two scores to boot, a performance worthy of a weekly honor.

And for its part, Colorado State isn’t getting prolific numbers out of Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi (1,312 passing yards, six touchdowns, five interceptions). But after leading the league in interceptions (16) last season, the sophomore is on pace to halve that figure — something head coach Jay Norvell said he’s emphasized throughout the offseason.

Advantage: Even with the turnovers, no Mountain West quarterback is playing as well as Dampier at this point. It’s far from a stretch to say he’s UNM’s most-valued asset — and advantage — until further notice. New Mexico

Running backs

New Mexico
