Texas vs Vanderbilt grades: Defense again shines; which Longhorns get the worst marks?

Texas football rebounded from last week’s loss to Georgia by fending off scrappy Vanderbilt 27-24 Saturday in Nashville.

The No. 6 Longhorns (7-1, 3-1 SEC) didn’t play the cleanest of games with 10 penalties and two turnovers, but quarterback Quinn Ewers and the offense proved efficient enough against No. 25 Vanderbilt (5-3, 2-2). The defense, the No. 1 ranked unit in the nation for yards allowed per game, stifled Commodore star QB Diego Pavia until a late flurry in the fourth quarter.

Here’s how the Longhorns graded out in their first true road SEC game:

Quarterback: B

During one stretch in the first half, Quinn Ewers played perhaps his best ball of the season while completing 17 consecutive passes. He had 211 of his 288 yards while helping Texas build a 21-10 halftime lead and played with a confidence not seen since his Week 3 abdominal injury that caused him to miss two games.

But he did have two interceptions after getting a pair of passes tipped by some Vanderbilt pass rushers. Texas can’t afford that carelessness as it gets into the heart of its SEC schedule.

Season average: B

Running back: B+

Quintrevion Wisner, who has settled into his role as the starting running back, may not break off highlight-reel runs but he moves the chains on the ground and through the air.

He ended the game against Vanderbilt with 79 yards rushing and 39 yards receiving on a total of 22 touches, and Jaydon Blue came off the bench for 71 yards from scrimmage on 13 total touches. But the power running game remains inconsistent.

Receivers: B+

Texas had to play without leading receiver Isaiah Bond, but sophomore DeAndre Moore Jr. stepped up with a career-high six catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Gunnar Helm continued to…
