Florida State football has had an ever-spinning carousel of starting offensive linemen this season.
In the 36-14 loss to Miami on Saturday, the Seminoles started the seventh different offensive line group of the season. Harvard transfer Jacob Rizy started the game at left guard as Darius Washington missed the game with an injury.
The Seminoles’ offensive line has struggled this season due to injuries, assignment issues and miscommunication. Those issues have contributed to the team’s faltering offensive production.
“We can’t have, if it’s an offensive line five guys next to each, we can’t have four executing a call and then one not,” FSU head coach Mike Norvell said. “We’ve got to make sure as we are out there on the field that if there is a check or something that we are doing that we are communicating that clearly throughout.”
“It’s all level, coaches, players, we got to make sure we all understand the importance of it, and we try to create that throughout the course of the week with practice.”

The Seminoles (1-7) made changes to its depth chart for its game vs. North Carolina as Rizy maintains his starting role and freshman Andre’ Otto moves to a backup center role.
It’s an effort to try and find some continuity for the unit as FSU still searches for ways to improve its offensive output with four games left this season.
The offensive line struggles haven’t been the sole issues as drops and quarterback struggles have been well-documented, but it’s clear that the issues up front haven’t helped the poor offensive production from the Seminoles.
The team averages 14.8 points per game and 272.5 yards of total offense and there has been little offering from the run game all season.
