Oct. 28—A balanced offensive output and a big third quarter advanced Greensburg on to the sectional semifinal with a 35-8 victory over Purdue Poly Englewood in the sectional opener.
The Pirates (1-9) will travel to Lawrenceburg (9-1) for the semifinal Friday.
Greensburg opened the scoring with a 59-yard pass play from Bryson Abplanalp to Carson Kilgore. The Pirates got the ball right back as Ethan Bishop recovered a Purdue Poly fumble. Greensburg was unable to capitalize on the turnover, but the Pirates continued to battle on both sides of the ball.
Defensive lineman Zion Ford recovered a fumble to end a Techies’ drive midway through the second quarter. The Pirates defense turned the Techies over on down at the Greensburg 5-yard line with less than two minutes to go in the half.
Greensburg went 95 yards and scored on a 3-yard touchdown run by Austin Cruz with :07 left on the second quarter clock. Jacoby Miller’s second point after made it 14-0 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Pirates faced a 4th-and-8 on the Purdue Poly 41-yard line. Abplanalp found Kilgore over the middle for the touchdown to push the lead to 21-0 with 7:38 to play in the quarter.
Greensburg’s Owen Best recovered a fumble by Purdue Poly on the kickoff with 7:30 on the clock. After a completed pass from Abplanalp to Bishop and a Cruz run, Cruz found the end zone from inside the 1-yard line to extend the lead to 28-0.
With 1:22 left in the third quarter, Abplanalp found Bishop for a 6-yard TD to put the Pirates on top 35-0 and start the running clock. Purdue Poly added a fourth quarter score to make the final 35-8.
For the Pirates, Abplanalp passed for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Cruz rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Myles McKinsey rushed for 44 yards and caught two passes for 35 yards. Best rushed for 32 yards. Kilgore had 106 yards…
