Ollie Gordon II will not opt out on Oklahoma State football: ‘I finish what I start’

STILLWATER — Twice during recent Oklahoma State football broadcasts after star running back Ollie Gordon II limped off the field with an injury, television commentators questioned whether Gordon should continue playing on a team that was well out of playoff contention and might not even make a bowl game.

The commentators suggested Gordon should sit out the rest of the season to protect his body for the NFL, where he’s projected as a high-round draft pick next spring.

When asked his thoughts on those comments, Gordon called those opinions “weird,” and “crazy.”

Gordon met with the media after Monday’s practice, where he discussed a variety of topics, including his motivation to continue playing on a team that has lost five straight games.

“I finish what I start,” Gordon said. “My mama always taught me that you finish what you start. Who would I be to give up on my team because our season’s not going how we want it to go?

“Just because our season’s not going how it’s supposed to, I’m supposed to give up now? I find that really weird and the way that people can just sit there and say that is crazy. But they’re wasting their breath saying it because I’m not giving up on my team.”

Gordon has rushed for 568 yards and eight touchdowns this season, averaging 4.2 yards per carry.

He and the Cowboys will try to snap their five-game losing streak when OSU hosts Arizona State at 6 p.m. Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium on homecoming weekend.
