WEST LAFAYETTE – For Purdue football’s two-quarterback plan to work, its participants must buy into both the concept and its in-game execution.
Ryan Walters isn’t worried about that part. The Boilermakers coach said Hudson Card and Ryan Browne’s lack of ego will prevent this experiment — now the stated game plan for Saturday at Northwestern — from becoming a contentious one.
“There was a play in practice where Hudson hit a long one, and you see Ryan Browne throwing his hands up in the air behind the huddle,” Walters said. “A couple series later, Ryan escapes the pocket and hits like a 60-yard run for a touchdown, and Hudson’s back there high-fiving and putting his hands up.
“So I think that’s why it works.”
Walters said Monday he does not know who will start Saturday, but both Browne and Card will play. The depth chart separated the two potential starters with an “or,” with Browne on the top line.
With Walters committed to playing both, though, who starts is less interesting than at what point the other quarterback enters. The Big Ten’s worst offense at achieving first downs, second-worst at converting third downs and third-worst at reaching the red zone will attempt to build an offensive rhythm with an inconsistent voice barking out the cadence.
Previous Purdue regimes used a multi-quarterback approach, with mixed results for both the short and long terms. A week off between games allowed this staff extra time to come up with a strategy.
“So much of it is just building a plan that both of them feel comfortable with and can execute, and then having a system in place that’s going to allow us to maximize their strengths and for us to find a rhythm,” interim offensive coordinator Jason Simmons said.
