Lehigh 19, Sarasota 10
JaÕkiee Robinson #3 of the Lehigh Senior High School Lightning football team scores against Sarasota High School at Lehigh on Monday, Oct. 28, 2024. Lehigh won 19-10.
Lehigh’s defense led the way to an upset against Sarasota for its first win of the season in a District 7A-8 matchup.
The Sailors (3-5, 0-2) got on the board first via a 37-yard field goal by kicker Cash Schweid.
Cornerback Dexter Smith put the Lightning (1-8, 1-2) in scoring range after intercepting Sailors’ quarterback Hudson West at the 10-yard line and returning it to the 3. After being pushed back, Lehigh quarterback Ja’Kiee Robinson punched it into the endzone from 5 yards out.
Sailors’ wide receiver Cooper Hamilton scored the final points of the half as he snagged a 34-yard reception for a touchdown for a 10-6 halftime lead.
Lehigh took the lead in the second half off a 1-yard QB sneak by Robinson at 6:56 of the third quarter but missed the extra point to make it 12-10.
It became a defensive struggle from there as they forced multiple three-and-outs. Defensive tackle Jeremiah Rugama sealed the game for the Lightning as he returned a blocked field goal 86 yards for a touchdown to extend his team’s lead 19-10.
A defensive stop by Lehigh put the game to bed on the following drive and put the game to rest.
“I was frustrated a little bit during the game because of crazy penalties and stuff like that, but it feels good to get a win,” Lehigh coach Antwan Dixon said.
