Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian said starting Longhorns safety Andrew Mukuba is “on the mend” as he recovers from a knee injury that kept him out of last week’s game against Vanderbilt.
It might be too early to tell when it comes to Mukuba’s outlook for Texas’ game against Florida on Nov. 9, though.
“I think he’s making good progress,” Sarkisian said on a call with reporters Wednesday. “Probably a better answer next week as we get back into game loop mode.”
Mukuba, who transferred from Clemson this offseason, has delivered a strong and immediate impact for the Longhorns.
He’s come away with a pair of interceptions, including a spectacular one against Georgia, and has broken up three passes to go with 25 total tackles.

There won’t be any official updates this week on the senior Austin native. With Texas on a bye week, the Longhorns are excused from mandatory SEC availability reporting, which would usually begin on Wednesday evening.
Sarkisian said he hoped to “take this week to get a few of our guys back healthy as we head into the final four games of the regular season here coming up, all going to be very difficult games.”
If Mukuba can’t suit up for the Longhorns (7-1, 3-1 SEC) when Florida (4-3, 2-2) comes to Royal-Memorial Stadium, they should be in good hands with Jelani McDonald.
Stepping in for Mukuba last week against Vanderbilt, the sophomore from Waco provided an instant injection of physicality for the Texas secondary.

He finished the game with seven tackles, including a tackle for loss, and raised the eyebrows of his teammates.
