Report: Texas Tech football’s Behren Morton practicing, expected to start this week

Texas Tech football quarterback Behren Morton is recovering well from injury and is expected to start on Saturday when the Red Raiders visit No. 11 Iowa State, according to a report by ESPN college football writer Pete Thamel.

The report, which Thamel attributed to unnamed sources, said Morton “looked strong in practice on Tuesday.” Morton suffered an injury to his left shoulder in the Red Raiders’ 35-34 loss Saturday at TCU and didn’t play after halftime.

The Avalanche-Journal could not confirm the report. A Tech athletics spokesman declined comment.

On Monday, Tech coach Joey McGuire said the injury was not as bad as initially feared and he expressed optimism about Morton’s chances of returning this week. On its weekly availability report distributed on Mondays, Morton was among 10 players listed as questionable for this week’s game.

“I don’t see any of those questionable guys not being able to play on Saturday,” McGuire said. “It’s good that we’re going to get those guys back.”

McGuire said X-rays and other imaging revealed no structural damage in Morton’s shoulder, adding that his range of motion had mostly returned as he worked through soreness.

Iowa State (7-0, 4-0 in the Big 12) hosts Tech (5-3, 3-2) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa.

True freshman Will Hammond played the second half at TCU. He completed 10 of 15 passes for 121 yards. He also had three significant runs: for 12 yards, for a 4-yard touchdown and for 5 yards to convert a fourth-and-2 situation.
