Does Carter Smith’s decommitment from Michigan’s open door for Bryce Underwood?

With the news swirling around Michigan possibly trying to flip the nation’s No. 1 player, Bryce Underwood, from LSU to the Wolverines, another headline-grabbing moment struck this week.

The Wolverines lost their 2025 quarterback pledge Wednesday night.

Fort Meyers (Fla.) Bishop Verot quarterback Carter Smith announced his decommitment from Michigan on X. The three-star quarterback had been committed to the Wolverines since last November.

The decision came after Smith returned to Michigan’s campus last weekend for another visit.

Smith’s decision comes at a time when reports have surfaced about Michigan putting together one of the biggest NIL packages in history to flip Underwood and keep him in the state. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound signal-caller out of Belleville (Mich.) plays his high school ball half an hour away from Ann Arbor.

On3’s Pete Nakos reported earlier in the week that the package would be worth more than $5 million to lure him away from Baton Rouge and into Ann Arbor.

USA TODAY Network’s Wolverines Wire spoke with individuals close to the program who confirmed that Barstool president Dave Portnoy is not involved financially with the package but still has some sort of involvement. With Michigan’s struggles at quarterback this year, Portnoy pledged to spend $3 million annually on Michigan’s NIL for the Wolverines to land a quarterback.

For now, Underwood is still committed to LSU. He committed to the Tigers back in January and is scheduled to be back on campus on November 9 when LSU hosts Alabama.

For Smith, it doesn’t seem like he will be back out on the recruiting market for long.
