MANHATTAN — The first College Football Playoff rankings are a week away, and Kansas State football’s dream of advancing to the expanded 12-team field is still very much alive.
That said, the Wildcats still have work to do, and the only sure path to get in is to keep on winning.
At 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12, the Wildcats currently are tied with Colorado (6-2, 4-1) for third place in the league, one game behind Brigham Young (8-0, 5-0) and a half-game behind Iowa State (7-0, 4-0), which was idle last week. The only team guaranteed to get in the playoff is the winner of the conference championship game on Dec. 7 in Arlington, Texas.
If K-State wins its last four regular-season games — this Saturday at Houston, followed by home games against Arizona State and Cincinnati and a trip to Iowa State on Nov. 30 — that should be good enough to make the championship game. Especially if BYU wins out and claims the top seed.

An 11-1 record should put the Wildcats in line for the other spot by virtue of head-to-head victories against both Colorado and Iowa State. Their lone loss so far came at BYU, 38-9, in their conference opener.
Of the four most likely candidates to reach the league championship game, K-State has the most difficult road, based on current standings. The Wildcats’ four remaining opponents are a combined 20-10 overall and 11-7 in the Big 12.
On paper, Iowa State has the second-most challenging schedule…
