What’s the status of Lathan Ransom and Zen Michalski for Ohio State game vs. Penn State?

Ohio State safety Lathan Ransom will return for the Penn State game after missing the Nebraska game due to a foot injury, Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said Wednesday.

“He got a great day of practice today, a full practice and is ready to go,” Day said.

Ransom, a senior, entered the season as the tackles leader among current Buckeyes with 152. He is fourth on the team in tackles this season with 26. He also has two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Ransom missed the last five games last year after sustaining a Lisfranc foot injury against Wisconsin. Against Nebraska, nickel cornerback Jordan Hancock moved to Ransom’s spot and had the interception that clinched OSU’s 21-17 victory.

Day was less definitive about the left tackle spot. Josh Simmons is out for the year with a knee injury. Senior Zen Michalski struggled in his first start last week, yielding two sacks and two quarterback pressures, and was injured late in the game.

“I would say it’s trending that Zen is not going to play, but we’ll keep evaluating it,” Day said. “I think we’ve got a pretty good plan moving forward.”

Asked what the plan was, Day said, “We’ll save that for Saturday.”

The most likely option is for left guard Donovan Jackson to slide to left tackle. Luke Montgomery or Austin Siereveld are the top options for left guard in that case.
