Alex Fernandez was only in his second year playing quarterback.
But he had big expectations when he took over as the starter under center for a Lansing Catholic football program coming off a state championship.
Things didn’t turn out as hoped.
Fernandez ended up splitting time under center that fall in a season where the Cougars finished 6-6. And the experience that year has been vital to the growth process for Fernandez, who is now making a big mark for Lansing Catholic as a senior.
“I think just experiencing failure and not having the results I expected played a huge role in just knowing that I needed to improve more of my mental side of the game and not so much the physical side,” Fernandez said. “I think that helped me a lot in developing as a quarterback and as a player on the football field. It’s taught me a lot of lessons of hard work and getting through hard times.”
Fernandez, who was voted the latest LSJ high school athlete of week winner, has displayed that development over the last two seasons. That’s included a big senior year where he has been a driving force behind Lansing Catholic extending its postseason streak.

Fernandez enters the playoffs with momentum after a big Week 9 performance in a 35-34 victory over Pewamo-Westphalia. He threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns, ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns and added eight tackles on defense in that victory.
