Nov. 1—RICE — There have been some big showdown games in the Golden Circle this year involving Mildred and Kerens but few expected the one Friday at Rice, where the winner of the Blooming Grove-Rice game will clinch a playoff berth in the 3A playoffs.
This is just what this GC rivalry needed — a good old fashion showdown for two local teams that make every meeting mean a little more.
Both teams have new coaches and both were looking for a chance to find a comeback road this season.
BG’s Lions have been one of the more consistent playoff teams in the Golden Circle before losing the final district game a year ago to fall short of the postseason.
The Lions are back with a talented and hungry bunch and a new head coach in Jason Burnett, who was their Defensive Coordinator three years ago.
Burnett, an energetic and positive-first-year head coach, loves Blooming Grove — the kids, the program and the folks who love his football team. He was thrilled to return this season, and a berth in the playoffs would lift just about everyone in the Grove.
It’s a brand new day at Rice, where Royce Slechta, who has had a long and successful career, has brought a new offense and a ton of optimism to a program that had won four games over the last three years.
A playoff berth at Rice will mean more than anyone can explain.
“It would be a big step in the right direction not only for the program and the kids but for the Rice community,” Slechta said. “And it would mean especially a lot for the seniors who have been through the storms of winning four games in three years.”
Rice hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2020, the year Rice Coach Andy Mills left after a five-year run to the postseason, where he won the first playoff game in Rice history.
Slechta is looking forward to having a “big game” at Rice — the first in a while.
