It’s the final stretch for the University of West Florida football team’s 2024 regular season.
With just three games remaining for the Argos, all of which are Gulf South Conference matchups, everyone looks to be more crucial than the last. UWF was not one of the 10 teams in consideration for the NCAA in its first regional rankings for the Division II playoffs. Three more wins, including against now-No. 1 Valdosta State in the latest AFCA poll, could change things.
But first on the doorstep is Erskine College. The Argos head to Greenwood, South Carolina, on Saturday for its penultimate road game of the season with a 1 p.m. CST (2 p.m. EST) matchup against the Flying Fleet. It’s Erskine’s first and only season in the Gulf South Conference, before it joins Conference Carolinas in 2025.
Saturday will be the first-ever matchup between UWF and Erskine.
“We’ll leave early on Friday morning. We try to get to the hotel earlier because of a 2 p.m. (EST) kickoff, then we’ll lose an hour because of the time difference,” UWF head coach Kaleb Nobles said. “If we can go up to Chowan (in North Carolina) and play well, we can certainly make it to South Carolina and play well, too.”
UWF is ranked within the Top 25 of the AFCA poll, slotting in at No. 21 this past week, but isn’t in the D2Football poll, likely based on the last few quality of wins including Mississippi College, Chowan and Shorter. It might be hard to crack the latter poll with a win after this weekend, but also consider it could push the Argos to a five-game win streak if all goes well this weekend.
While those polls don’t necessarily reflect who’s in and who’s out of the Division II playoffs, it certainly never hurts a team’s confidence to be in the national-ranking talks.
“(Our players) know their backs are against the wall, and they have to keep playing well these next…
