Cros-Lex football cruises past Marysville in Division 4 district semifinal

MARYSVILLE — Courtesy of its powerful ground game, the Croswell-Lexington football team had a party on Friday.

The Pioneers ran wild in the first half and never looked back against Marysville, 31-6, in a Division 4 district semifinal at Walt Braun Viking Stadium.

John Herman had two rushing touchdowns for the Cros-Lex, which improved to 7-3 overall and advanced to next week’s district final.

The Vikings finished the season at 8-2.

Herman opened the scoring on a 6-yard touchdown run with 5:17 left in the first quarter. Two minutes later, Corbin Allen kicked a 37-yard field goal to give Cros-Lex a 10-0 edge.

The Pioneers were just getting started. Herman scored again on a 41-yard touchdown run nine seconds into the second quarter. Then, with 34 seconds left before halftime, quarterback Jaxon Johnston threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Cody Metevier.

Marysville quarterback Brady Wright left late in the second quarter with an injury and did not return. Cros-Lex took its 24-0 lead into halftime.

The Vikings got on the board when Hunter Likins threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Allen midway through the third quarter.

Marysville’s defense settled in and forced three second-half turnovers. But its offense, battered and bruised, was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Cros-Lex found the end zone once more when Johnston found Metevier for a 27-yard touchdown pass. A successful point-after attempt made it a 31-6 advantage with 5:02 left in the game.
