La Vergne football coach Mike Woodward said the decision to resign Friday after five seasons at the helm of the Wolverines was “a personal decision.”
“To be honest, the last four years have been miserable for me personally,” Woodward said. “It’s not the kids. It’s just the obstacles I continued to face there at La Vergne. We all know there’s a big difference between coaching football and running a program. Every coach will tell you that. What I’ve learned is there’s a big difference in running a program and running a program at La Vergne.”
Woodward took La Vergne to the state playoffs during his first season (2020), despite taking over during the COVID-19 pandemic and not having a spring practice.
However, in the past four seasons the Wolverines combined to go 6-34 with no playoff berths.
The Wolverines went 0-10 in 2024, ending the season Thursday with a 55-6 loss to Antioch.
“I appreciate Coach Woodward’s dedication and commitment to our program,” La Vergne principal Theowauna Hatchett said. “His efforts to support our student athletes and his contributions to our program are greatly appreciated. I wish him all the best in his next endeavor.”
Hatchett said she and the administration are “moving pretty swiftly to find a new coach.”

Woodward will continue teaching at La Vergne through Thanksgiving and then transfer to Nashville’s James Lawson High as a teacher only.
La Vergne football coach Mike Woodward, shown during a 2022 game, resigned Friday.
“I won’t be doing any coaching there,” Woodward said of the transfer. “I’ll revisit (coaching) later. But right now, after these last few years, I have every intention of taking next season off, getting away and trying to recuperate.”
