Michigan State football winners & losers: Nick Marsh shines as Spartans fade elsewhere

EAST LANSING – Here are the Michigan State football players who helped or hurt their stock in the Spartans’ 47-10 loss to No. 10 Indiana on Saturday.

Winners

Michigan State’s Nick Marsh, left, makes a catch as Indiana’s Terry Jones Jr. defends during the first quarter on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

WR Nick Marsh

Everyone sees now why coach Jonathan Smith said all the way back during August preseason camp: “Nick Marsh made a couple of plays, which I guess now you start to expect out of him.” Marsh continues to make a case to be on the Freshman All-America team at the end of the season after catching five passes for 78 yards, including two spectacular toe-tap sideline catches – one of them an 18-yard touchdown that was his team-leading third. Marsh also leads MSU with 553 receiving yards and is second with 33 catches, three fewer than senior Montorie Foster (453 yards, two TDs on the year).

S Jaylen Thompson/Justin Denson Jr.

With Malik Spencer leaving the game late in the first half, the Spartans turned to two true freshmen to fill the void in the middle of an already banged-up secondary. Thompson took over on Indiana’s final drive of the second quarter, and he finished with a team-high six tackles. Denson joined him in the fourth quarter, with Nikai Martinez sliding down to nickelback, and Denson made two stops to give MSU a glimpse at its future at safety.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Johnson responded with his best day as a Spartan, finishing with four catches on five targets for 48 yards, showing some slipperiness in space from the slot with 22 yards after those catches while…
