How Savannah native Eric Phoenix is having a big year with South Carolina State football team

Eric Phoenix, the Savannah native who made a name for himself as a star quarterback at Windsor Forest, is closing out his college career with a flourish at South Carolina State.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound lefty started his career at Benedict College, before transferring to Murray State for a year. He came to Orangeburg to play for South Carolina State as a graduate transfer over the summer and is having an excellent season.

The Bulldogs have won five straight games and sit at 6-2 on the season with a 2-0 record in MEAC Conference games.

On Thursday night, the Bulldogs were in the spotlight as they beat North Carolina Central 24-21 in a game televised nationally on ESPN2. Phoenix put on a show as he completed 26 of 36 passes for 321 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, while rushing for 60 yards and a score on 13 carries.

“It’s been a great experience coming to South Carolina State,” said Phoenix, who earned his degree with honors in sports management before joining the Bulldogs. “I’ve become close with a new group of guys — being the new guy you need to get to know everyone. I’ve done that and now we’re playing together in an explosive offense.”

Phoenix said he wanted to keep playing, and transferring to SCS as a graduate student was the perfect fit with Chennis Berry, his former head coach at Benedict College, taking over the Bulldog program this year. Berry, 51, was a standout offensive lineman in his playing days at Savannah State.

“It just felt right with Coach Berry here now, we had a lot of success working together at Benedict — we won the first (SIAC) conference championship there in 2022 and have a great relationship,” Phoenix said. “I know God has a plan for me and reuniting with my old coach felt good.”
