NFL draft analyst Todd McShay calls Ohio State’s Caleb Downs ‘best safety in the country’

Ohio State football safety Caleb Downs has already been a significant addition to the program through the transfer portal.

The No. 3 Buckeyes (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) depend on Downs as a major player in the secondary, one which limited Heisman-contending quarterback Drew Allar to 146 passing yards and an interception in a 20-13 OSU victory over then-No. 3 Penn State last week.

His performance is now drawing rave reviews from NFL draft experts, including former ESPN analyst Todd McShay. McShay took time to praise Downs while watching the NFL’s Monday Night matchup between Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“This is completely random on a Monday night… but just watching Ohio State D tape… Caleb Downs is the best safety in the country. He’s just different. One of the best football players in the country. He would be a top-15 pick in 2025 draft if he were eligible,” McShay tweeted.

Is Caleb Downs eligible for the 2025 NFL draft?

While McShay had high praise for Downs, he is not yet eligible for the 2025 NFL draft.

Downs, who has 34 total tackles, three pass deflections and 0.5 sacks for the Buckeyes this season, is only a sophomore. He will not be eligible for the NFL draft until after the 2025 college football season. However, his stock is already on the rise.
