When Michigan football played the schedule game this offseason — you know, the one where you go through the months ahead, project out the certain wins, likely wins and spots where there are potential losses to avoid — anybody telling the truth would admit Saturday’s contest at Indiana (3:30 p.m., CBS) fell in the first category.
As the year moved on, the Hoosiers moved to the second category.
Now, with game week here, it has firmly fallen into the third.
The Wolverines (5-4, 3-3 Big Ten) entered the season as reigning national champions, and though that still remains true, the more accurate vibe of this team is one that has lost three of its past four games.
Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore walks off the field after 38-17 loss to Oregon at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024.
Now, a group that has suffered more setbacks the past eight weeks than it had in the previous three years combined, and has no true goals left to play for, has the unenviable task of going to one of five remaining undefeated FBS teams. The visit comes one week after it fell 38-17 to No. 1 Oregon.
Many knew the Ducks — a program loaded with funds for NIL, the appeal of Nike, the success of recent years and the addition of a Heisman favorite QB — would be tough. Nobody expected the Hoosiers to be unbeaten (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten) through nine games for the first time in history.
Well, other than first-year head coach Curt Cignetti.
“He’s done an unbelievable job with his team,” Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said Monday at his weekly news conference in Ann Arbor. “They play disciplined, play fast, play physical. Offensively, they do a good job spreading you out, keeping it simple for their players and making it difficult for your defense. Defensively, just play great team defense and try to make you make a mistake.”
