Oakwood locks in playoff spot over Bynum

Nov. 4—OAKWOOD — In the game of six-man football, a 16-point lead can go away quickly, especially between district rivals.

The Oakwood Panthers made sure that didn’t happen in their 68-42 victory over the Bynum Bulldogs at Panther Memorial Stadium.

Oakwood Athletic Director and Head Football Coach J.J. Johnson’s team held a 32-16 lead at the break and Johnson knew they had to play sound football.

“Bynum is a good team and both of us stacked the schedule,” Johnson said. “They are a good team and tough and go 290-300 pounds across the line and we knew it would be a tough game. They knew to keep our offense off of the field they had to run the ball and milk the clock. We got three turnovers and played well at some points.”

With the win, the Panthers clinched a playoff berth and are now 4-5 overall and 2-0 in District 12-A, Division II.

“We are shooting for the district championship. Ever since I have been here, we have been the district champions and I have told the guys to not look at our record, because we have played some tough teams,” Johnson said. “A play here and a play there could have easily had us at 7-2, but we are not that way. We want to finish off on a good note and play our best ball next Friday night. We want to feel good about going into the playoffs and go out here and 45 them by halftime. We know Trinidad is a good team and we have to play our best ball with limiting turnovers and no defensive mistakes.”

The Bynum Bulldogs are 1-8 overall and 1-1 in district play. They wrap up the season Friday, Nov. 8 against Mt. Calm. The Panthers are 5-4 overall and 1-1 in district play.

Oakwood plays for the District 12-A championship at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8 as they host the Trinidad Trojans at Panther Memorial Stadium. Trinidad (2-7 overall, 1-2) has lost three straight following a 67-20 defeat to Mount Calm…
