Oregon’s star receiver Tez Johnson is going to be out — but only temporarily.
That was the update Monday night from coach Dan Lanning, who wouldn’t put a timetable on the return of Johnson, who was injured in Saturday’s win against Michigan during the Ducks’ opening possession.
Johnson was tackled hard to the ground by Wolverine defensive back Wesley Walker along the Michigan sideline at the 12:50 mark of the first quarter following an 11-yard catch-and-run. He quickly left the field and was taken into the locker room. He returned in street clothes and with his right arm in a sling.
“Tez will be down, certainly right now and in the near future but I do anticipate us getting Tez back here soon,” Lanning said.
Oregon wide receiver Tez Johnson celebrates a touchdown as the Oregon Ducks host the Boise State Broncos Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.
It was the same update for starting guard Marcus Harper II, who limped off the field in the fourth quarter and later was on the sideline with an ice wrap on his knee.
“Neither one of those injuries are as bad as maybe they appeared on the field,” Lanning said. “I think we’ll have those guys back but I don’t know what that looks like right now. We’ll do what we always do, take care of the players and what’s in the best interests of them and both of those guys are fighting to get back as soon as we can have them.”
This season, Johnson is second in the Big Ten and tied for fifth nationally with 64 receptions. He also is the Ducks’ leader in receiving yards (649) and receiving touchdowns (eight) — which is also the second-most scores in the conference.
The senior has been a star since transferring to Oregon from Troy in 2023 to play alongside his brother, then-Duck quarterback Bo Nix.
He went on to set the Oregon single-season receiving record with 86 catches…
