The area where LSU has distinct advantage over Alabama

Kyren Lacy 2 runs the ball as the LSU Tigers take on the Nicholls Colonels at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, LA. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024.

Few things are certain in life, but LSU having talent at the receiver position is. The Tigers have another strong group in 2024, led by Kyren Lacy and Aaron Anderson.

LSU will need Lacy and Anderson to make plays if it hopes to upset Alabama on Saturday.

The Crimson Tide secondary is typically among the best in the nation, but LSU’s receivers may have the edge this year. Alabama is young on the backend and Bama DC Kane Wommack is relying on freshmen like Jaylen Mbakwe and Zaben Brown at corner.

That stands in contrast to LSU’s veteran pass-catching group.

The overall numbers posted by Alabama’s passing defense aren’t bad, but offenses like USF and Tennessee left yards on the board, and missing open receivers. What you see on the stat sheet isn’t reflective of what’s seen on tape in this case.

With Garrett Nussmeier, LSU has the QB to cash in when a receiver gets seperation. If Lacy and Anderson are running open on Saturday night, Nussmeier is going to hit them.

According to PFF, four of the six Bama corners with 100 or more snaps have coverage grades under 70. That stands in contrast to what Bama rolled out there last year with Kool Aid-McKinstry and Terrion Arnold — two of the best cornerbacks in the country.

LSU’s at its best when the passing attack is rolling the receivers are making plays. That’s the recipe for an LSU win.

LSU’s winning on the perimeter becomes even more critical when you examine how LSU matches up on the offensive line. There’s not much faith in LSU to get a consistent push in the run game.

This Alabama defense is far from invincible with Nick Saban gone and there will be chances for big plays — LSU has to hit them when they’re there.
