Two injured Jackson State football receivers done for rest of season. Two more may join them

Wide receivers Rico Powers Jr. and Fabian McCray are out of the remainder of the season, Jackson State football coach T.C. Taylor said Monday.

Taylor added the Tigers are still evaluating the status of injured receivers Tyquan Henderson and Kobe Paul, but also expects them to miss the rest of the season.

Henderson’s injury came in JSU’s 37-17 win over Bethune-Cookman in Week 9 after he took a hit on his left knee late in the game. Powers, Paul and McCray have all been injured since the Week 4 win over Southern.

“I know that Rico and Fabo (Fabian McCray) are gone for the season,” Taylor said. “… We are still evaluating Kobe and Tyquan to be out for the season.”

Powers is a redshirt junior who had nine receiving yards on four receptions in three games. Paul, a senior, had six receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown in three games. McCray, a graduate, had 30 yards on five receptions. Henderson, a senior, appeared in seven games and was third in receiving with 238 yards, 14 receptions and a touchdown.

No. 20 JSU (7-2, SWAC 5-0) has three regular-season games remaining and potential postseason play as the Tigers sit first in the SWAC East. JSU will host Mississippi Valley State (0-9, 0-5) in its final regular season home game on Saturday (2 p.m. HBCU GO) at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Redshirt sophomore Joanes Fortilien leads JSU in receiving with 468 yards and seven touchdowns. He and Spencer have been the only JSU receivers to play all nine games this season. Spencer has 429 receiving yards with three scores.

Several wideouts, including Isaiah Spencer, Ja’Naylon Dupree and tight end Marvin Landy, have filled the gaps. Taylor credited quarterback Jacobian Morgan with helping build chemistry with new receivers.
