Two-way impact threat Reed helps Middletown oust Oakdale in flag football tournament

THURMONT — Middletown girls flag football has a friendly neighborhood Spiderman on its team, as coach Mike Kennedy calls her.

That would be senior Arianna Reed.

“Everything is sticking to her hands,” Kennedy said.

Be it passes in tight windows from quarterback Genevieve Chase or critical interceptions like the one she snagged Monday night against Oakdale, Reed has leapt from gridiron newbie to a two-way impact threat in just a few months.

Reed’s pick sealed the No. 4 seed Knights’ 21-12 quarterfinal win over the No. 5 seed Bears at Catoctin High and kept their Frederick County championship defense alive.

Middletown (6-3) will face top-seeded and undefeated Urbana in Wednesday’s semifinals at Brunswick High, with the winner of that contest moving on to the Frederick County Public Schools championship against either Linganore or Frederick High.

“If they run the plays like they did tonight, we can compete with Urbana,” Kennedy said.

Reed had a major role in making those plays function.

The senior has developed a tight connection with Chase, with the duo sometimes making on-the-fly adjustments to find open space. Reed has become one of Chase’s favored targets as a result, as she caught a team-leading five passes for 61 yards against Oakdale (4-5).

Other times, Reed is in the middle of the Knights’ bevy of trick plays. She took a backwards pass late Monday and completed her second throw of the season, setting up Briana Lee’s insurance 9-yard touchdown catch with just under two minutes to play.

That score came on a double reverse.

“We’re just trying to get in their heads, really do something different,” Reed said.

This all comes from a player who doesn’t play any other sports but decided to give flag football a try in her final year of high school.
