Four Saturdays remain in college football’s regular season, including 22 SEC head-to-head matchups. Five of those matchups will largely determine the hunt for berths in both the SEC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff, including Alabama football’s trip to LSU on Saturday (6:30 p.m. CT, ABC).
A look at the league’s five most consequential remaining contests:
Alabama at LSU, Saturday: It’s not certain that the winner will make the CFP field, but it’s certain that the loser won’t. With four losses between them, this isn’t the titanic clash it’s been in the past, but it’s still got just enough juice to be relevant to a 12-team playoff field.

Georgia at Ole Miss, Saturday: At 7-2, Ole Miss’ CFP hopes are dim as Alabama’s and LSU’s, but Lane Kiffin has one more shot to win a big game. If he does so, the Rebels’ remaining path to the playoff (they finish against Florida and Mississippi State) becomes easier than Georgia’s.
Tennessee at Georgia, Nov. 16: In a best-case scenario for Georgia (7-1), back-to-back wins over Ole Miss and Tennessee would solidify the Bulldogs’ playoff spot, and go a long way toward an SEC title game berth. At the very least they need a split of those two games. The Volunteers, also 7-1, have a shot at their best regular-season record since they ran the table for the national title in 1998.
Missouri at South Carolina, Nov. 16: South Carolina (5-3) is out of the playoff hunt, but after drumming Texas A&M, the Gamecocks are peaking at the worst possible time for Missouri (6-2). One of five two-loss teams in the SEC, the Tigers desperately need QB Brady Cook to roar back from injury in peak form.
