Friday Football Flashback | Forest Hills dominated in PIAA playoff rematch against Bedford 30 years ago

Editor’s note: Friday Football Flashback is a weekly series highlighting games in the region over the past 50 years. The series details high school gridiron action that occurred this week on the schedule during the past five decades.

10 Years Ago

Nov. 14, 2014: Somerset limited Clearfield to 43 total yards of offense to capture the District 5-6-8-9 Class 3A championship, and Chestnut Ridge edged rival Bedford on a late field goal to claim 5-2A gold for a third straight year a decade ago in Week 12.

Somerset won its first district championship in program history as seniors Logan Eller and Colton Slayback were in the Bison backfield most of the night in a 27-0 victory at Richland’s Herlinger Field. Clearfield entered the week averaging 35 points a game and 350 yards on offense.

Somerset’s Jake Heiple ran for 158 yards and a pair of 35-yard touchdowns that gave the Golden Eagles a 21-0 halftime lead. Clearfield managed only 12 yards of offense in the second half.

In Loysburg, kicker Sean Van Meter booted a 41-yard field goal with 1:51 left as Chestnut Ridge won 17-14 over Bedford. Trent Crouse’s fumble recovery started the field-goal drive for the 10-2 Lions.

20 Years Ago

Nov. 19, 2004: Berlin Brothersvalley beat Shade 27-19 in the District 5-1A title game at Bedford to earn the Mountaineers’ first district title since 1990.

The 11-0 Mountaineers’ Ed Miller, Adam Gessner and Brandon Twombly each ran for touchdowns, and quarterback Ben Hay threw to Donnie Ziegler for another score.

30 Years Ago

Nov. 18, 1994: Forest Hills achieved redemption and advanced in the PIAA Class 2A playoffs in dominating fashion, 33-6, over Bedford at Windber Stadium.

Bedford had beaten Forest Hills 8-0 during the regular season. The Rangers’ high-scoring offense put forth another big performance, with quarterback Justin Myers…
