Memphis athletic director Ed Scott is big on perspective.
Which is why he made it clear Wednesday that he has football coach Ryan Silverfield’s back despite the disappointing turn the 2024 season took last week after Memphis lost at UTSA — putting a major dent in the program’s AAC title chances and College Football Playoff dreams.
“Sometimes you have to step back from the situation and understand how good we really are,” Scott said during an interview with Jeff Brightwell at the weekly coaches’ show. “Nobody’s happy with 7-2. But . . . I think we have the right guy leading us. That’s really the thing I’m most happy about.”
Silverfield has taken some heat since the Tigers fell 44-36 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. They are not out of the AAC title race, however. One scenario that could give them a shot is if they win out, Navy loses to either USF or East Carolina, and Tulane loses to Navy, Scott said. He also pointed out that Memphis has endured its share of injuries and that the team’s effort level has not diminished.
“We’ve given up too many points in some games. I think Ryan knows that better than anybody,” Scott said. “He’s not happy where we are. He wants to win every game. That’s our common denominator.
“(But) my job as athletic director is to be the stable rudder. As things go up and down, I’m the one person who has to be calm, cool and collected. Unless we’re playing and I’m yelling at officials.”
Scott also discussed a variety of other topics during Wednesday’s interview.
