White Out ‘homecoming’: What Penn State football’s Vega Ioane can prove vs. Washington

He’s the largest player on the Penn State football roster.

He’s also its most dynamic blocker, one of the most effective and intriguing offensive linemen in the Big Ten and beyond.

Who’s traveled farther to accomplish what Vega Ioane − all 6-foot-4 and 348 pounds of him − has for these Nittany Lions?

Which makes Saturday night’s White Out game against the Washington Huskies even more special for the redshirt sophomore, who’s already enjoyed the most unexpected viral moment an anonymous blocker can have.

Now, he gets a homecoming, of sorts, one he could have never anticipated before Washington abruptly joined the Big Ten in 2023. He will have family members watching in the Beaver Stadium stands Saturday. He will play against Huskies he knew growing up − ones he nearly became teammates with.

“Playing my hometown team who I was committed to, I guess people kind of see it like a rivalry type of game,” Ioane said this week in a Zoom interview with reporters. “I’ve seen some people saying that I made a mistake coming here. I’m gonna find out Saturday, but we’ll see.”

Vega Ioane’s path to Penn State football

Ioane went to high school in Graham, Washington, about an hour from Seattle and the UW campus. He was a high school All-American for a team that went 15-0 and won a state title. He verbally committed to play for the Huskies in June 2021.
